AKC Pet Insurance

Five Things to Consider Before You Buy AKC Pet Insurance

Even though very few companies offer pet health insurance, you will still want to find the best one. As you may be aware, the American Kennel Club (AKC) is heavily involved in issues related to certifying and educating people about pedigreed dogs.

Therefore, many consumers choose AKC pet insurance because they believe it is a reliable and useful product. It is important to realize that there are always going to be frustrations when you have to deal with an insurance company. Before you sign on with AKC pet insurance, you should be aware of some of the things you might encounter. Depending on your situation, you may well find that awareness of certain issues will be enough to ensure that you are able to avoid them.

Canine Demographics

Today, many dogs live well past nine years of age. Unfortunately, as with aging humans, this is when they will most likely start having serious health problems. While some insurance plans will cover older dogs, the AKC does not.

If your dog is approaching 9 years old, you should ask and find out what will happen when he/she reaches the 9th year. In some cases, you may conclude that it is best to purchase insurance from another carrier that will not refuse to renew the policy after the dog reaches a certain age. Without a question, you will not want to have to deal with dysplasia, arthritis, or some other issue without the benefit of pet health insurance.

Choosing the Right Policy

As you learn more about AKC Pet Insurance, you will find that each policy only provides a certain amount of money.

For example, the cheapest policy may only cover $1000.00 worth of claims. Considering the cost of modern veterinary care, you should consider looking at policies that provide more benefits.

At the very least, if your dog needs $20,000 worth of medical attention, you won't be trying to figure out how to pay all of that money out of pocket. Needless to say, if you choose the wrong type of coverage, it may be too late to go back and upgrade once your pet starts having a specific type of health problem.

Your Visit to the Veterinarian

Unlike many other pet insurance plans, you will need to bring a claim form with you when you go to the veterinarian.

While these forms are not especially difficult to find and fill out, you may be inclined to forget. It is also important to realize that bringing along a claim form will not exempt you from paying the veterinarian for services rendered.

Similar to other pet insurance companies, you will have to send in a claim form along with proof of payment in order to get reimbursed. Before you have your veterinarian fill out this form, you should take the time to make sure that you understand how the form needs to be filled out. This will eliminate processing issues later on.

Coping With the Claims Process

When individuals have to deal with health insurance carriers for humans, they expect to have to deal with all kinds of red tape and delays.

On the other side of the equation, health insurance carriers will always say they need to make sure the claim is valid. Today, there are people that feel the claim processing system used by AKC is cumbersome and difficult. On the other hand, people that understand their coverage levels, and follow directions appear to have no problem getting reimbursed.

If you are not sure about how to fill out the claim form, it is best to call AKC and ask before you send in the request for payment.

Comparing AKC Pet Insurance to Other Policy Providers

Chances are, if you are planning to buy house insurance or auto insurance, you will take the time to shop around before committing to any specific carrier.

Ideally, you should go through the same process before you buy pet health insurance. At the very least, if you feel that you don't like some of the limits associated with AKC pet insurance, you can see if another carrier will provide better coverage.

There is no question that AKC pet insurance can provide valuable coverage to help you manage various kinds of illnesses and injuries. Unfortunately, if you do not select the correct policy, or you do not fill out the claim form correctly, this type of insurance will be useless.

While it is not always easy to control these factors, at least you can consider them during the process of shopping for pet health insurance.
